I took a survey of our EHS classmates, some of my friends and relatives in Florida to see how they fared from Hurricane Ian. Depending on where they lived in reference to the on-shore path of Ian, is how well they did. To most in the hurricane area, lost power for 3-6 days. Some, like Emil Friedauer that lives in the western part of the FL panhandle, it was a non-event. To those in the Villages, Orlando Area area, lots of rain and blowing vegetation and few trees down, no or minimal power loss. To Sandy Weir Teller in Naples, about 5 miles inland, minor damage to pool screens. Rich and Mary Nelson also in So. Naples, fared OK. I didn’t hear from anyone in the Ft. Myers area and Chuck Twa has reportedly moved from there possibly back to IN. Anybody in the Ft. Myers area that was close to the Gulf, took a serious hit from Wind and Tidal Surge. Further south is Bonita Springs. Don Pletcher and Marge Flanders Nickel both have homes in the area on the bay. Don has a 16th floor condo and the building got 6 feet of water surge on the first floor. He fared well. The building is part of a series of 5 or 6 towers that are tied to a golf course. The sand barrier island gives that area some protection. Marge has a 2 story home on the bay a mile down the coast and got 4 feet of water on the first floor, causing major damage. Her Master Bedroom, and living, kitchen etc. areas are all on the first floor. That will take time to repair and we wish her well. She’s staying with Don for the time being. If you look at after storm aerial photos, Ft. Myers is a disaster close to the coast. Bonita Springs got a smaller surge, but both places, you can see all of the pools that were not raised are muddy for a ways inland. My College friends and relatives were all spared any damage mostly living north of the path. I haven’t queried the SC area, so I don’t have any info. on anybody there. Stay Safe. Dave
