We lived about 1/2 mile from Main Street, where most of these businesses were located. I can still remember going to the Dairy Queen on hot summer nights, or stopping into McDee’s for the 10 cent Burger and a Coke! My sister and I would get New York Cheese Cake from Azars after shopping downtown at Ziesel’s. And who could forget the ‘Ugly Arch’ that hovered over the intersection outside Ziesel’s doors.
My older brother and his wife lived on Morehouse Ave., just a few blocks from A&W’s root beer Barrel on East Lusher Avenue. Is this the same Root Beer Barrel? Could Ron let us know if this is the same one I remember? Such fun!
I was wondering how many classmates remember that Azars was built after the McDonals’s pictured in this photo was built?
The site of Azars was the former Elk’s Country Club, now known as Christiana Creek CC Elks#425.The Elk’s had a 6 foot
wrought iron fence around the back grounds.
One night I had a pajama party and all the girls decided to walk to McDonalds with our pj’s on underneath our coats. I lived off Jackson Blvd. on Pacific Street, two blocks from the new YMCA/YWCA. When we got to the Elk’s we decided to climb over their fence to avoid the ‘cop-on-the-beat’.[Remember when the police walked the beat on Main Street?]
As we were climbing, one of the girls got hung-up on a spike at the top of the fence. What a time we had getting her down. She finally had to wiggle out of her coat to free herself. We giggled and laughed ourselves silly. An adventure to remember! Thanks Ron for bringing back a good
“teenage moment”
The A&W Root beer barrel was at the corner of N. Main St. and Sycamore St. just a block from the bridge crossing over to Island Park. I lived about a block away from the A&W and needless to say, as a kid, spent a lot of time hanging around there.
There was a root beer barrel on Lusher, but I don’t remember it as an A&W. Seems like the Dairy Queen was on Beardsley near the corner of Vine St. We used to walk past there on our way home from St Thomas and Northside Jr. High
Question: I have called the library to find the answer but they haven’t responded. DOES ANY BODY REMEMBR THE NAME OF THE HUDSON aUTO DEALER ON MAIN ST, JUST SOUTH OF THE BRIDGE.
LEAVE ACOMMENT HERE IF YOU HAVE THE ANSWER.
